Entering the race for the first time, the “Island Property KIPANU” team came home in first place in the Wilco 2010 Relay around the main island of Efate
which was held on Saturday 24th July. The ten runners were all from the same community in Tanna and comprised staff and family members of Island
Property’s maintenance team. The win was particularly inspirational for the team following the tragic death of one of their main runners, Pierre Paul,
who was killed by a bus while out on an early morning training jog earlier in the week. The boys turned tragedy and despair into triumph by turning in a
time only 16 minutes off the race record, some 8 minutes 30 seconds ahead of the second placed team. The runners from the Kipanu (place of water) area on
Tanna have vowed to return next year and defend their title. The whole team attended the awards presentation at the Anchor Inn later in the evening,
where they received the Premier Male Category Cup (which Wilco announced would from now on be known as the Pierre Paul Trophy in memory of the young man
who died while training) as well as the winners cheque of VT 200,000.
